Do we need to have crane tickets in Alberta?

One Question we are asked a lot is “Do we need to have crane tickets in Alberta or B.C?”

In each Province in Canada has their OHS standard take from the CSA Standard on knuckle boom cranes as well as all other crane types.

It requires any business that provides these cranes for employee use in their jobs, to also provide specific training for these cranes to be used safely.

There are no laws in the sense that you buy a crane and the law says you have to train, this is the confusion.  When you buy any specific tool to provide to your employees, you must also provide crane training for those employees operating that crane.  In this case a crane is a very specific device and you want very specific training for that crane.   A generic program can do more harm than good!

The confusion is also what lift capacity does the crane not need any formal training and can you have a senior employee instruct on the use of the crane as well as many other questions.  So the question of  Do we need to have crane tickets in Alberta is yes.

IF you have a well documented, formal training program within your organization that outlines the entire process then you have done your due diligence and OHS sees it that way. HOWEVER if you do not have well documented program, did not evaluate the appointed person you thought was well versed in crane use and operations and they learned from someone who provided a lot of good information BUT also provided them with their bad habits, then you are not safe nor is your employees.
Why take that chance in the first place?

We provide all the documents, proper operator safety insight and are factory trained.
Don’t set your operators up to fail, set them up to succeed and keep your insurance premiums down in the process.

Why not contact us, yes there is a cost but we do over-deliver and you won’t sit back wondering why you spent that money to properly train.

Light Duty Picker Certification for Operators

We offer what is known by many as picker certification, however it’s more than just that.

Knuckle Boom Crane AccidentOne question we are asked many times, is what is the law about picker training certification?

The not so simple answer is there is NO law, just as there are no laws about your having to have your operators certified in H2S, confined space entry, fall arrest, first aid, etc.  Now before you back out of the post and say we are crazy, these are all standards your customer, OHS in your respective province and you as an employer must provide to your employees!

The crane you now own, is very much a specific tool that you purchased to do a job and like the SCBA or harness you ask them to wear, the crane is unique in the sense that light duty picker training is seen as something that is not on the list, yet the crane is often used 5x or 10x more than any of the other certificate courses are.

Insurance companies will not be so friendly with you in the event of a preventable incident, OH&S officers who may have to investigate any incidents that may occur have always had the ability to charge the employee with a criminal charge, yes it’s rare but do you want to not provide any training because you hired a person that says “it’s easy, I’ve done it hundreds of times before” or “I can run any gear you have” or how about, “I ran a picker at my old job” and never checked to see if it was true or not!

I know, the times now are very…different and sometimes finding the right fit for your company isn’t always so easy we do understand this aspect to be sure, however, if your customer is okay with not having a light duty picker certificate, OHS and insurance may not be so much.

We also understand that costs right now are something all business owners want to keep in check, we offer a great program to help those out yes a payment plan, but right now something is far better than nothing.

There is so much more to this than meets the eye and we have a lot to say about this.

Find out more and how it can affect your insurance premiums by NOT providing certified programs to your employees.

The program is for ANY knuckle boom crane that lifts LESS THAN 8-tons in capacity in Alberta.

Coverage is based out of Edmonton for this training we travel to your shop and provide your company with this program that is CRANE SPECIFIC, not a one size fits all.

We now provide training for BC based customers!

We bring everything needed to your location so you save on sending your operators anywhere, and with our new program that provides insight from HIAB, PALFINGER, FASSI and other brand name cranes on the market, you can be sure your crews are getting the latest updated information there is.

We don’t do rigging training during this 1-day program ass there just isn’t enough time and it is a full separate day if you are interested.

Upon completion of the program, your operators will be certified for a period of 3 years (like H2S, Fall protection, confined space, etc) that need to be renewed every 3 years and hopefully they are never tested, whereas the HIAB picker you are using daily, weekly, etc still to this point does not require a ticketed operator which we don’t understand.

Our certification is recognized by all the operators in Canada so there is no need to be concerned if what you are paying for is or is not recognized.   We are also recognized by OH&S for our operator safety program.

Cold Lake Bonnyville Area Light Crane Safety Training

We’ve been providing our picker training in the Cold Lake and area for 6+ years now, the areas surrounding Cold Lake such as La Corey, Bonnyville and other areas.

One common denominator is all the companies in Cold Lake use us for their picker operator safety training for a reason.

The typical unit we train on is either a HIAB 077, Palfinger PK series, Fassi is also a very popular brand given that Transform Crane and Equipment in Lloydminister do a great job of installations, service and sales of the Fassi brand.

So if you want picker safety training on cranes under 8-tons capacity (threshold for having to have a trade operator run it in AB), if you are in the Cold Lake Bonnyville area give us a call we can typically get out there within 7-10 days depending, we also provide changeover training, Saturday training, remote location picker training, etc.

Contact us by phone at (844) 334-8847 or send us an email by clicking HERE and we’ll get right to you just as soon as we can.   We will save you money by not having to send your operators anywhere, that saves on meals, lodging, travel, etc.
